Good to Know

Understanding Violations

California classifies childcare violations into two types based on severity.

Type A Violations

Serious

These are the most serious deficiencies — posing an immediate risk to the health, safety, or personal rights of children. Examples include lack of care or supervision, access to open bodies of water, and access to dangerous chemicals.

Citations for Type A violations are always issued, even if corrected on the spot. They require immediate corrective action.

Type B Violations

Minor

These are less serious deficiencies that, if not corrected, may become an immediate risk to the health, safety, or personal rights of clients.

Examples include faulty medical record keeping and lack of adequate staff training. These still need to be addressed but do not pose an immediate threat.

Important Disclaimer

California Daycares is not affiliated with the State of California or the Department of Social Services. This site is an independent resource created to make public licensing data more accessible to parents.

While we strive to keep our data current and accurate, we recommend verifying important information directly with the facility or the CDSS. Licensing data is updated periodically and may not reflect the most recent changes.

The presence or absence of violations on this site should be one of many factors considered when choosing childcare. We encourage parents to visit facilities in person, ask questions, and trust their instincts.
